This criminal-justice foundation was as much a staging challenge as a design opportunity, since the office had to remain open during its expansion to a second floor. We enlarged the existing reception and streamlined open offices. On the new floor, we gutted cramped rooms and exposed cast-iron columns and heavy timbers. Freestanding ash-paneled cubes house the kitchen, copy room, and coat closet. We recessed a reception banquette into one cube and lined it with knitted ribbon.
