Manhattan Valley Apartment

You can transform a tortuous pre-war apartment into an open loft, if you don’t mind the remnants. A colonnade of gas pipes becomes a screen for the open kitchen, and old flooring patterns reveal the ghosts of walls removed. Straightening a crooked wall gave us not only a clean surface for wallpaper but extra space for a storeroom and a half bath. A laundry and home office are tucked discreetly into the kitchen. The master suite features a cedar soaking tub; the kid’s bathroom, grandma’s chandelier.
